ASTM B1023 Published
ASTM International’s metallic and inorganic coatings committee (B08) has developed a new standard that describes a test method for testing abrasion resistance of hard anodic coatings. These coatings have applications in many industries, including aerospace, food processing, and firefighting, among others.
The new standard, which will be published as B1023 Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Hard Anodic Coatings by a Taber-Type Abraser, describes how the Taber abraser can be used for such testing.
“The abrasion resistance of anodized aluminum is an important property that is required for material performance and quality control,” says ASTM International member Alan Jaenecke. “The new standard will be used to evaluate abrasion resistance of electrolytically formed hard anodic oxidation coatings on a plain, rigid surface of aluminum or aluminum alloy.”
Jaenecke notes that the test described in the new standard provides procedural details that were lacking in the common test procedure used for this testing. Primary users of the new standard will include anodized aluminum processors, third party testing laboratories, and manufacturers that use anodized aluminum components.
